Deux Helix – Interview
The Nite Visions – Were here with Eddie Orea and Judy Merino of “Deux Helix”, so what’s the story behind the name Deux Helix guys?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – The idea came spontaneously, we were in a different state of mind and we both just knew the name felt right, so we told each and the rest is history.
Judy (Deux Helix) – We’ve been telling each other that we’ve been wanting to make music together, we went to school one day and we passed by this dorm called the helix and the word just got stuck in our head. We wanted it to have something to do with DNA, at first we thought hmm double helix, but then we decided to change it to the French word for two which is Deux and that’s how “Deux Helix” came about.
The Nite Visions – How long have you guys been making music together?
Eddie (Deux Helix) The idea started in 2008, but we started production in 2009, we finished our first song in January 2009.
The Nite Visions – How did you guys meet?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – Well were cousins haha.
Judy (Deux Helix) – Ha-ha blood
The Nite Visions – Ha-ha that’s right sorry, you guys came to Vegas with so many people I kind of forgot who’s who.
Eddie (Deux Helix) – Yeah we did ha-ha
The Nite Visions – Who are some of your guys influences musically?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – A lot of the electronic music that’s out right now, we like to focus on stuff that will take your mind somewhere else. We listen to a lot of sound tracks, a lot of orchestral stuff, Danny Elfman, Wendy Carlos, of course composers like Beethoven.
Judy (Deux Helix) – When we first started we used to be so into Justice and of course Daft punk.
The Nite Visions – Weren’t we all, they’re innovators, so what current projects are you guys working on?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – Were about to release a remix that we did for Simian, they didn’t ask us to make it for them we just did it. Hopefully they hear it and they like it.
Judy (Deux Helix) – Were going to see their show this Friday, we should just give it to them in person that would be a lot cooler.
The Nite Visions – When can we preview it?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – We can give it to you guys really soon. We have over 30 original tracks that we haven’t release yet, but there are 2 main tracks were focusing on right now.
Judy (Deux Helix) – We might remix “Night Call” by Kavinski as well.
The Nite Visions – Do you guys play a lot of gigs around town?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – We only started to play last December and from there we’ve played a lot of house parties. Our first official event was in Las Vegas at Nite Visions. Were supposed to go play in Europe and we’ll also have some shows here in California real soon.
The Nite Visions – How do you feel about the Electro Dance scene here in LA?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – In California its actually pretty big, we have EDC and Hard, electronic music has a huge following out here, but I don’t think you could compare it to Europe. It’s a different vibe, but the same congregation.
The Nite Visions – What did you think about Las Vegas crowd?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – It was a lot like LA, it was cool.
Judy (Deux Helix) – It was less raverissh, which is a good thing. Girls were actually dressed normally.
The Nite Visions – Would you guys consider coming back to Vegas for another show?
Judy (Deux Helix) – Yeah definitely
Eddie (Deux Helix) – Yeah we would, but we have do a sound check this time.
The Nite Visions – ha-ha yeah sorry about that we will definitely do sound check next time.
The Nite Visions – We here you guys are going to be working with “Born To Film”, can you tell us about that?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – He found us through MySpace around August last year and he approached us saying he was starting a new record label and he wanted us to be his first artist for the label.
The Nite Visions – Did you know who he was prior to that?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – Yeah we knew he did work for the Bloody Beat Roots.
Judy (Deux Helix) – I knew of his photography, but I didn’t know that he was starting a label.
Eddie (Deux Helix) – He’s doing a lot for us he’s shown our music to a lot of producers in Europe, like Alex Gopher, Etienne De Crecy, and Brodinski they’ve all supported our music and gave us feedback. He has stuff planned for us, we really can’t say too much. There’s an EP coming out soon, and were going to Europe very soon as well.
The Nite Visions – Any name drops on who might remix some of your songs?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – So far just “PYQ” has remixed our songs.
Judy (Deux Helix) – We might also be working with the “Bloody Beat Roots” for a classical re-make of Bach, “Toccata and Fugue in D minor”.
The Nite Visions – Where do you guys see yourself in 2yrs?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – Hopefully playing a really elaborate theatrical show in front of thousands of people.
Judy (Deux Helix) – Hopefully headlining Coachella in 2012 and the world will end after our last song.
The Nite Visions) – What’s your guys goal as musicians?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – A lot of the stuff that inspires our music is stuff that we’ve realized through all of our experiences and truths we’ve discovered about life, we don’t agree with goverment and society especially on how we treat our environment. Most of the ideas are filtered through our music, we want people to realize, open their eyes and awaken to the programming the world has posted upon us.
The Nite Visions – Wow that was deep, very well said. Judy do you feel any pressure being a woman in the industry that’s not just a Dj?
Judy (Deux Helix) – Yes and we love it, I do feel the pressure though.
The Nite Visions – What would you say your guy’s style is fashion wise?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – I’m into like military type stuff, some abstract type stuff.
Judy (Deux Helix) – Like super edgy shit with leather and dark colors.
The Nite Visions – We liked your helix outfits that you wore when at the show in Vegas, did you design those yourselves?
Eddie (Deux Helix) – We designed them, but a friend sewed them for us.
The Nite Visions – I tried to find pictures of you guys online, but there’s none to be found, is there a reason behind your illusiveness?
Judy (Deux Helix) – Ha-ha yeah we try to do that it makes it more mysterious that way.
Eddie (Deux Helix) – We actually did have a few pictures up at one time, but our manager asked us to take them down, so we could have some illusiveness to us.
Judy (Deux Helix) – Also when you see peoples pictures you kind of judge a book by its cover and we want people to judge the music and not the image.
The Nite Visions – We definitely want you guys to come back to Vegas very soon for another show, everyone loved you guys.
Judy (Deux Helix) – We want to come back as well keep us posted.
Eddie (Deux Helix) – Yeah we have a few things planned, but were definitely interested in playing again in Vegas.
The Nite Visions – Well Eddie, Judy thank you for the interview.
Judy (Deux Helix) – Thanks
Eddie (Deux Helix) – Thanks
